Order flowersListowel is a heritage market town on the River Feale in North Kerry, known as a literary capital. A local florist can deliver to the Square, the estates and the farms around it.
Listowel is a market town on the River Feale in County Kerry, about 28 km from the county town of Tralee. It had 4,794 residents in the 2022 census, which makes it the third largest town in the county, and it carries a surprising reputation for such a small place. The organisers of its writers' festival call it the Literary Capital of Ireland, and playwrights and authors including John B. Keane and Bryan MacMahon lived here. Flowers sent to Listowel often go to families who have known each other for generations, and a short, warm card is appreciated.
The town grew up around a fortress of the Fitzmaurice family and its Square. Listowel Castle was built in the 15th century and was the last stronghold of the Geraldines to be subdued, falling after a 28-day siege in November 1600. Today the Square is the centre of social life, with shops, pubs and the weekly bustle of a market town. A bouquet ordered for a shop or business on the Square is easy to find, and a named recipient helps the driver on busy days.
Listowel Writers' Week was founded in 1970 and is described as Ireland's oldest literary festival. It was set up to celebrate North Kerry writers and to give others a chance to meet new audiences, and its programme includes workshops, readings, theatre and tours. Past participants include Seamus Heaney and J. M. Coetzee, and a bouquet for a favourite performer or organiser is a charming gesture. The Listowel Food Fair, running since 1995, brings artisan producers and chefs to the town, and the town has hosted the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann on 14 occasions between 1970 and 2002.
Listowel is a township at the centre of a farming area, so many orders go to rural addresses. Give the townland and the nearest crossroads as well as the Eircode, since a house number may not exist. If a bouquet is going to a farmhouse, mention the best time of day to find someone in, since most households are working outdoors by day. For the estates on the edge of town, the house number and estate name are usually enough.
Listowel has long been a centre of dairy production, and the Kerry Group began here in 1972 as North Kerry Milk Products. The company grew from a local co-operative into a global food business, and many families in town have a connection to it. A bouquet to a retiring colleague or a long-serving worker is a good way to mark the end of a career, and many florists can add a ribbon or a small gift tag with the message of your choice.
Funerals in Kerry are community occasions. Notices on rip.ie give the times of the removal and funeral Mass, and many say family flowers only, in which case a Mass card or a donation to the chosen charity is the way to show respect. Where flowers are welcome, ask the funeral director when and where they should be sent. Wreaths and sprays are usually sent to the funeral home or the church, while a bouquet of mixed flowers suits the family home in the days after.
A 21st or 80th birthday is a good reason for a large mixed bouquet, while a milestone wedding anniversary traditionally calls for roses. For a newborn, soft pink and blue or cream is the established choice, but a pot plant for the new mother lasts longer than cut stems. For Mothering Sunday, which falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, order a few days ahead to be sure of a delivery date.
Before ordering for a patient, check which hospital and ward the person is in. Ring the ward to ask whether flowers are accepted and what the ward's name is. Where flowers are not allowed, send them to the home or choose a card and a small gift instead.
A florist in Listowel knows the value of a good sentence. Keep the message short and personal, name the occasion and sign off with your own name rather than a generic phrase. A line of local colour, such as a reference to a favourite pub, a hurling match or a book, can turn a standard bouquet into something the recipient will keep.
Did you know? Listowel has hosted Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 14 times between 1970 and 2002, more than any other venue since the festival began in 1951.
