Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersClonakilty is a small, award-winning town at the head of Clonakilty Bay in West Cork. This page covers local landmarks and what to remember when choosing flowers for someone there.
Clonakilty, often shortened to Clon, is a town in County Cork at the head of the tidal Clonakilty Bay. Its population was 5,112 at the 2022 census, so it is small, and it is a tourism hub for West Cork. The Irish name, Cloich na Coillte, means the stone castle of the woods. The surrounding farmland is mainly dairy, and many people who live on the town's outskirts have a rural address with a townland name.
Cork Airport is the nearest airport, and Bus Éireann runs coaches to Cork and to Skibbereen. If you are visiting the person you are sending flowers to, it is worth allowing time for the road, because West Cork distances are longer than they look on a map. In summer a bus link also runs on to Killarney via Skibbereen, Bantry, Glengarriff and Kenmare.
Clonakilty has built a reputation for community pride. It won the Irish Tidy Towns competition in 1999 and was named Ireland's Tidiest Small Town in 2012, 2017 and 2022. It was Ireland's first Fairtrade Town in 2003, and it became the country's first Autism-friendly town in 2018. It is also a member of Cittaslow, the international movement for slower, more local living. That sense of civic care shows in the planting around Emmet Square and the Kennedy Gardens in the middle of town.
For a gift, that means locals often notice thoughtful details. A seasonal bouquet with local-looking flowers, such as garden roses, hydrangeas or wild-style mixes, tends to feel right in a town that cares about its public spaces.
Michael Collins attended the local boys' national school, and a statue of him stands on Emmet Square, where he lived for a time. A museum dedicated to him opened in 2016. The Church of the Immaculate Conception, a large Catholic church designed by George Ashlin in the Early French Gothic style, was built in 1880. Kilgarriffe Church, a Church of Ireland church, dates from 1818.
Nearby beaches include Inchydoney, which has a Blue Flag, and the sandy Long Strand about 11 km away, looking out over the Galley Head lighthouse. De Barra's Folk Club, Shanley's and O'Donovan's are among the music venues in town. The Clonakilty International Guitar Festival takes place in mid-September, and the Waterfront Festival and the Motion Festival run in August. If you are sending flowers to a musician or to a guesthouse during those weeks, order a little ahead and tell the recipient to expect a bouquet.
Birthday bouquets for Clonakilty work best when they match the season: spring tulips and daffodils, summer sweet peas and roses, autumn dahlias. For a wedding anniversary, a dozen roses or a mixed arrangement with the couple's favourite flowers is a safe choice. Mother's Day in Ireland is Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent, which usually means March. If your mother or grandmother lives in a farmhouse on the edge of town, remember to include the townland and Eircode, and add a phone number if you can.
In West Cork, as elsewhere in Ireland, a funeral often follows two or three days after a death, and neighbours call to the house or the funeral home for the removal. The notices on rip.ie say where the removal and funeral Mass will be, and they sometimes say "family flowers only". Honour that wish and consider a Mass card or a donation instead. When flowers are welcome, send them to the family home or the funeral director and write a short, kind message. A simple arrangement in white, cream or soft green is always appropriate.
Clonakilty does not have a large general hospital of its own, so patients from the town are usually treated in larger hospitals elsewhere in the county. If you are not sure where someone is, ask a family member for the hospital name, the ward and the visiting arrangements before you order. Hospitals differ on whether they accept flowers at all, and intensive care units generally do not. Ring the ward first and give the patient's full name. Sending flowers to a home for recovery is a thoughtful alternative.
Order online, enter the address, pick a delivery date and write your message. For guesthouses, hotels and shops on the Main Street, mention the business name and a contact person. For homes in the countryside, include the townland, the nearest landmark and the Eircode, and keep your phone number handy in case the driver needs directions. Flowers ordered in good time for a Friday or Saturday date can be a lovely surprise for a weekend gathering.
