Kinsale is a historic port and fishing town on the south coast of County Cork, about 25 km from Cork city. It sits at the mouth of the River Bandon, near the Old Head of Kinsale, and the 2022 census counted a population of 5,991, a figure that swells in summer when visitors fill the harbour. The town is known for its restaurants, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, The Bastion, among them, and for its gourmet food festivals. People send flowers here for weddings, anniversaries and holidays as often as for family occasions.
Kinsale has been a strategic harbour for centuries. In 1601 a Spanish expedition landed here, and the Battle of Kinsale followed, ending the Nine Years' War. Desmond Castle, dating from about 1500 and also called the French Prison, stands in town, while Charles Fort, a star-shaped fort of 1677, guards the harbour mouth at Summercove. James Fort is on the other side of the bay. St Multose Church, a Church of Ireland church dating from 1190, is among the oldest buildings in town, and the Market House goes back to about 1600. Visitors who get married or celebrate an anniversary here often choose flowers that match the grey stone and the sea light.
The old centre of Kinsale is made up of narrow, steep streets, and many houses carry a name rather than a number. Always give the street, the house name and the Eircode, and add a landmark if the property is on a lane. Properties in Summercove, Scilly and the hills above the harbour are all part of the town's area, and the florist knows how to reach them. Rural addresses outside the town should include the townland.
Many orders go to guests staying in Kinsale, and the best way to reach them is through the hotel or guesthouse. Give the name of the property, the guest's full name, their room number if you know it, and the date they arrive. For a restaurant or a food festival, a florist can arrange something to be waiting at the table. Hotel staff are generally helpful with flowers for guests, but advise them in advance to avoid confusion at the front desk.
Kinsale suits a coastal wedding or a quiet anniversary dinner. Soft whites and creams look good beside the harbour, and wildflower-style posies suit a country feel. If you need flowers for a ceremony rather than a gift, speak to a wedding florist well before the date, as the summer calendar fills up. For a milestone anniversary, a bouquet of roses with a handwritten card is hard to beat.
Kinsale holds an annual jazz festival on the last weekend of October, with concerts in pubs and hotels throughout the town, including on the October bank holiday Monday. Visitors fill the guesthouses, so a bouquet sent for that weekend should be ordered well in advance. A florist can deliver to a musician, an organiser or a host, but give a clear venue and a time.
Kinsale is part of the Cork South-West area, and funerals here follow Irish custom, with a removal and a funeral Mass usually two or three days after a death. The death notice on rip.ie states whether the family wants flowers or donations. If it reads family flowers only, send a Mass card or a card to the house. If flowers are welcome, the funeral director will say where to send them.
Cork city, about 25 km away, has hospitals including the private Bon Secours. Ring the ward before ordering, because many wards do not take flowers, and give the patient's full name and ward. When flowers are not allowed, send them to the home for the recovery period.
A good card for a Kinsale delivery might refer to the sea, the weather or a shared memory of the harbour. Keep it short, sign it, and make sure the recipient can tell who sent the bouquet. If the flowers are a surprise, say so on the card, as this helps the person who opens the door.
Did you know? The inquest into some of the victims of the RMS Lusitania, sunk on 7 May 1915, was held in Kinsale's courthouse.
