Cobh (pronounced "cove", Irish: An Cóbh) is a seaport town on the south coast of County Cork, on the south side of Great Island in Cork Harbour. The 2022 census counted 14,148 people. Between 1849 and 1920 it was called Queenstown, and the present name is a Gaelicised spelling of the English word Cove, with no meaning in Irish. Over the town stands St Colman's Cathedral at 91.4 metres, one of the tallest buildings in Ireland, so you can find your way to Cobh by looking for the spire.
Cobh is the home of Ireland's only dedicated cruise terminal, and the streetscape and piers are much as they were when the Titanic called here on 11 April 1912. Between 1848 and 1950 about 2.5 million of the 6 million Irish emigrants to North America left from Cobh. The Lusitania survivors and the dead were brought here in 1915, and more than a hundred victims are buried in the Old Church Cemetery just north of the town. This is a place that remembers departures and arrivals, and a bouquet fits that tradition well, whether it marks a homecoming or a farewell.
Facing the town are Spike Island and Haulbowline Island, where the Irish Naval Service has its headquarters. Visitors come for the Queenstown Story at the Heritage Centre, the Titanic Experience and the Cobh Museum in the former Scots Church. If you are sending flowers to a guesthouse or a hotel for a visiting relative, name the visitor and the arrival date clearly in the message.
Great Island is connected to the mainland by a single road, the R624 over Belvelly Bridge, and the town also has a rail link: commuter trains run between Cork city and Cobh, calling at Fota, Carrigaloe and Rushbrooke. Delivery covers the town centre around the waterfront and the cathedral, the higher streets above it, and Rushbrooke, where the old Verolme dockyard stood. Always include the Eircode and the road name, because the town rises from the waterfront and similar-looking streets sit at different levels.
A cross-river ferry from Glenbrook to Carrigaloe takes four minutes, but a road delivery normally uses the bridge. If you want a bouquet to arrive at a particular time of day, say so in the delivery note and give the recipient's mobile number.
Cobh people are proud of their sailing and rowing traditions. The Cobh People's Regatta is held around August, and the Royal Cork Yacht Club, which began as the Water Club on Haulbowline in 1720, has long since moved across the harbour to Crosshaven. A bouquet to congratulate a sailor, a rower or a team after a good result in the harbour is a lovely gesture. For birthdays and anniversaries, a mixed seasonal bouquet is a safe choice. New babies, graduations and retirements are the other occasions we see most often.
Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, and it is worth ordering a week or so ahead, because a harbour town with a busy cruise season can have a lot going on. St Brigid's Day on 1 February is another date when a spring posy goes down well.
In County Cork funerals usually happen two or three days after a death, with a removal the evening before and sometimes a wake at home. Death notices on rip.ie normally give times and the church, and may say family flowers only or ask for donations. Respect that, and send a card or a Mass card if you are asked not to send flowers. For a funeral at St Colman's or another parish church, ask the funeral director or the family where the flowers should go.
Check the spelling of the recipient's name and the Eircode, and give a mobile number. The town rises from the waterfront, and a driver who cannot find a door will appreciate a line such as "green door, third on the left". Choose a delivery date when someone will be at home, or name a neighbour who can accept the bouquet. A short message in your own words is better than a long one copied from a card.
Did you know? Cobh was the final port of call for the Titanic on 11 April 1912, and 123 passengers boarded there.
