Hyacinth – symbolism, fragrance and care tips

No spring flower has as intense a fragrance as the hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis). The dense spikes with bell-shaped flowers in deep purple, pink, blue or white fill an entire room with a distinctive fragrance. For many, a hyacinth in a pot is the surest sign of spring.

The history of the hyacinth

The hyacinth originally comes from the Mediterranean region and the Middle East. In Greek mythology, the flower arose from the blood of the young Hyacinthus, who was loved by the god Apollo. The flower is associated with sorrow, but also with beauty and renewal. In the 18th century, a hyacinth craze swept Holland, not unlike tulip mania – rare varieties were sold for enormous sums.

What does the hyacinth symbolise?

  • Purple hyacinth: Sorrow and regret, but also deep love.
  • Pink/red hyacinth: Playfulness and joy.
  • Blue hyacinth: Faithfulness and constancy.
  • White hyacinth: Prayers and loving beauty.
  • Yellow hyacinth: Jealousy – avoid as a love gift.

Hyacinth in water – a fascinating experiment

You can grow hyacinths in special hyacinth glasses with just water. Place the bulb right above the water surface – it should not be submerged – and keep it dark and cool for 8–12 weeks until roots and a shoot have grown. Then move it into the light and watch it bloom indoors. This is a beautiful and exciting alternative to regular pot planting.

How to care for hyacinths in a pot

  • Buy hyacinths in bud for the longest flowering enjoyment.
  • Water sparingly – the bulb rots easily with too much water. Let the soil dry out a bit between waterings.
  • Place the pot in a cool and bright location (10–16 °C is ideal) – warmth speeds up flowering but considerably shortens it.
  • Avoid draughts.
  • NOTE: The hyacinth's bulb and leaves can irritate the skin. Wear gloves when handling.

Frequently asked questions about hyacinths

Which soil type is best for hyacinths?
Hyacinths thrive best in well-drained soil with a pH around 6–7. The bulb is prone to rot in heavy, waterlogged soil, so feel free to mix in coarse sand when planting. Plant the bulbs in the ground in autumn (September–November), approximately 15 cm deep, for flowering next spring.
How do you water hyacinths in a pot?
Water sparingly and let the soil dry out a bit between waterings. During the dormant period, the bulb needs dry soil. Avoid watering directly on the bulb or leaves – this increases the risk of rot and fungal attacks.
Can hyacinth bulbs be reused next year?
Yes, leave the leaves until they've turned yellow. Then dig up the bulb and store it dry and cool until autumn. Plant it out again in autumn for new flowering next spring. Be aware that forced hyacinths tend to flower somewhat weaker in the second year.
