Kildare town grew up around the church and monastery that Saint Brigid is said to have founded in the fifth century, and St Brigid's Cathedral still stands in the centre. Around 10,300 people live in the town, about 50 kilometres west of Dublin, with the open grassland of the Curragh on its eastern side and the Irish National Stud and its Japanese Gardens just outside.
The county has about 247,000 people and has roughly doubled in size since the early 1980s, largely through commuter estates. Naas, the county town and the largest town, is covered on a page of its own. Newbridge, Celbridge, Leixlip, Maynooth, Clane, Athy, Monasterevin and Sallins are covered too, along with the villages in between. In the newer estates the same development name can appear on several roads, so give the house number, the estate and the Eircode. For stud farms and houses on the Curragh, add the name of the yard or property and a mobile number.
Saint Brigid's feast falls on 1 February, which has also been a public holiday in Ireland since 2023, held on the first Monday of February or on 1 February itself when it is a Friday. In Kildare the day is marked with the weaving of Brigid's crosses and a programme of events around the cathedral and the holy well. A bouquet for someone in Kildare that week is a nice touch, but order a day or two ahead because the bank holiday weekend affects delivery.
Hospital patients from the county are mostly treated at Naas General Hospital; ring ahead to ask whether the ward takes flowers. In many Irish homes a Brigid's cross, woven from rushes, is hung up on the feast and kept until the next one.
Did you know? The Japanese Gardens at the Irish National Stud in Tully, just outside Kildare town, were laid out between 1906 and 1910 to symbolise the journey through life.
