The dahlia originates from Mexico and Central America, where the Aztecs cultivated it both as a food crop (the root is edible) and for ceremonial purposes. The Spanish brought the tubers to Europe in the 1780s. The flower is named after the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl, which gives Scandinavia a certain right to call the dahlia somewhat their own.
