Roscrea at a glance

Roscrea is a market town in the north of County Tipperary, close to the border with County Offaly. It lies in a valley between the Devil's Bit mountain to the south-west and the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the north-east. The Irish name Ros Cré means Crea's wood. The 2022 census recorded 5,542 residents, which is above the old peak of the 1830s, and the Eircode routing key is E53.

The town sits where the R445 and N62 roads cross, about 71 kilometres from Limerick and 122 kilometres from Dublin. Bus Éireann route 12 links Dublin and Limerick through Roscrea, and the railway station on the Limerick to Ballybrophy line serves the town, so visitors from the capital can arrive for a family weekend without a car.

A Heritage Town

Roscrea is one of the oldest towns in Ireland. It grew around a monastery founded by Saint Crónán in the late 6th century, and parts of that early settlement still stand. Roscrea Castle dates from the 13th century and, together with the adjoining Damer House on Castle Street, is among the notable buildings of the town. The Round Tower on Church Street is a national monument, and the Romanesque gable of St Cronan's church and a 12th-century high cross can be seen close by.

Because so much of the town is historic, many Roscrea houses are old and tucked down narrow lanes. When you order, ask the recipient for the full street name, house number and Eircode, and a landmark if the address is hard to spot. Three kilometres outside the town, Mount St Joseph Abbey is a Cistercian monastery with a boarding school, Cistercian College, and visitors to the area often combine a call at the abbey with a visit to relatives in town.

Funerals and sympathy in Roscrea

In Tipperary, as in the rest of Ireland, a funeral usually follows two or three days after a death, and the notice is placed on rip.ie. The removal often takes place the evening before, and the funeral Mass the following morning. Rural families often prefer family flowers only, or ask for donations to a named charity, so read the wording on the notice before ordering anything.

If you cannot attend, a bouquet to the family home, a Mass card or a handwritten message of sympathy are all well received. Flowers for the service itself should name the church and the time, so the florist can plan the delivery. Wreaths and sprays in white and green are the traditional look, while a hand-tied bunch in softer colours suits a house visit.

Birthdays and milestones

A wedding or a milestone birthday in Roscrea is often a big family event, and flowers are part of it. Roscrea Hurling Club were the first All-Ireland club hurling champions in 1971, and the town is proud of its sporting history, so a bouquet in a club's colours is a fun idea for a supporter's birthday. Greens and golds are easy to arrange, and the florist can include a small ribbon in the colours you choose.

For a new baby, a small posy in white and pastel shades is a classic gift, and many families keep the card in the baby book. Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, and early orders help, since florists get busy in the week before. Thank-you bouquets for teachers and carers are also common as the school year ends, and a plain hand-tied bunch is enough.

Sending to a house, a school or a workplace

Roscrea has a number of schools, including Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré, and food production is a major employer. If you are sending flowers to someone at work, include the company name and the department, and ask whether reception can hold the bouquet until the end of the day. Schools generally prefer that deliveries are made to the office instead of directly to a classroom.

At home, a bouquet may be left with a neighbour if the recipient is out, which is common in a smaller town. Add a mobile number so the courier can contact them, and say on the order whether a neighbour is an acceptable alternative.

Hospital patients from Roscrea

A patient from Roscrea may be treated in a hospital in a neighbouring county, so check which hospital and which ward before ordering. Ring the ward first to find out whether flowers are accepted, give the patient's full name and ward, and think about waiting until they are home if the ward says no. A small potted plant or a card with a message of recovery is a thoughtful alternative.

When you place an order for Roscrea, you choose a delivery date at checkout. If the date is close to a funeral or a big family occasion, order as soon as you know the details, and keep the Eircode and mobile number to hand.

Frequently asked questions about sending flowers to Roscrea

Where can I send flowers in Roscrea?
Orders can go to homes, workplaces, schools and churches in Roscrea and the villages around it. Add the Eircode, which starts E53 for the town, and a mobile number for the courier.
Can I send funeral flowers to Roscrea in Co. Tipperary?
Yes. Look at the death notice on rip.ie first, as many families ask for family flowers only or for charity donations. If flowers are welcome, name the church and the time of the service.
What flowers suit a birthday in Roscrea?
Seasonal flowers are best: tulips in spring, sunflowers and dahlias in summer, and rich autumn mixes later in the year. Add the recipient's favourite colour if you know it.
What can I send if a patient cannot have flowers?
Ask the ward first, then consider a small potted plant, a card or a bouquet sent to the house after discharge. Intensive care and some other units do not accept flowers at all.
