Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersDrogheda is the largest town in the Republic of Ireland, 43 km north of Dublin on the River Boyne. A florist hand-delivers your bouquet on both the Louth and Meath sides of town.
Drogheda is the largest town in the Republic of Ireland by population and by area, with 44,135 residents at the 2022 census, and it sits on the Dublin to Belfast corridor about 43 km north of Dublin. The Irish name, Droichead Átha, means the bridge at the ford, and the River Boyne still divides the town in two. That split has an odd consequence for anyone sending a gift: most of Drogheda is in County Louth, but the southern fringe, with more than 8,000 residents, is in County Meath. Both sides are served by the same florists, so a Drogheda address works whichever county the letterbox is in, but it helps to write the full address and Eircode carefully.
The historic core stands on the south bank of the Boyne around Millmount Fort, the Norman motte-and-bailey castle that looks down on the river and was probably built before 1186. St Laurence's Gate, which features on the town's coat of arms, is another landmark, and West Street is the main shopping street, where St Peter's Church holds the preserved head of Saint Oliver Plunkett. Highlanes Gallery, in the former Franciscan church on St Laurence Street, is a handy reference point when a delivery has to be left at a nearby shop or office. Flowers can also go to the housing estates on both sides of the Boyne and to the villages and one-off houses in the hinterland, which has more than 70,000 people within 15 km.
Drogheda is a lively festival town. The Drogheda Arts Festival takes over the May bank holiday weekend with music and street entertainment, and in 2018 and 2019 the town hosted Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which brought huge crowds for traditional music. A bouquet for a musician after a recital or a teacher at the end of term is as natural here as a birthday bunch. Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent and is the busiest weekend of the spring; order a few days before and choose a delivery date for the Friday or Saturday. St Brigid's Day on 1 February is a good moment for a posy of snowdrops or early narcissi for an older relative.
Funerals in County Louth follow the usual Irish pattern: the death notice appears on rip.ie, a wake or removal takes place within two or three days, and a Mass follows at the local church. Many notices say family flowers only, in which case it is kinder to send a Mass card, a message or a donation to the charity named. Where flowers are welcome, find out whether they should go to the funeral home, the church or the family house, and check the time of the removal. A simple wreath, a spray of white lilies and roses, or a sheaf of seasonal flowers is more manageable than a large stand, and a handwritten line on the card, such as a memory of the person, is worth more than any formula.
Patients from Drogheda are often treated outside the town, and hospital rules about flowers differ widely. St James's Hospital in Dublin states on its own website that flowers and plants are not permitted for infection prevention and control reasons, and the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital in Cork asks for flowers to be sent to the patient's home after discharge. Check with the ward before you order anything for a hospital, give the patient's full name and ward, and never assume an intensive care unit will take a bouquet. A delivery to the patient's home in Drogheda once they have recovered is nearly always welcome.
Give the recipient's name exactly as it appears on the door or the buzzer. Many Drogheda addresses are in apartment blocks near the river, where a delivery driver needs a unit number and a working phone number. If you are sending to a workplace, add the department and a reception contact. Choose a delivery date when someone will be there to receive the flowers, avoid hot sunny windowsills for the first day, and cut the stems at a slant before putting them in clean water. Cool rooms keep roses and chrysanthemums fresh longest, and a short card message with your name takes seconds to add at checkout.
Drogheda has families with relatives overseas who like to send flowers home for Christmas, a christening or an anniversary. If you are sending from outside Ireland, write the address exactly as an Irish postman would read it, with the Eircode on the last line, and add the recipient's mobile number so the driver can call ahead.
Did you know? Drogheda's coat of arms includes a star and crescent, which Irish president Mary McAleese said in 2010 was added in gratitude for food sent by the Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I during the Great Famine.
