Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersSligo sits between the Garavogue and Knocknarea in the west of Ireland. Choose a delivery date and a local florist will tie the bouquet for an address in town or along the coast.
Sligo is a coastal town in the west of Ireland, and Yeats country starts at its edge. A collection of paintings by the poet's brother, Jack B. Yeats, hangs in the Niland Gallery, and the Yeats Summer School brings visitors to town every year. When someone wants to send flowers here, the reason is usually closer to home: a birthday, a stay in hospital, a funeral in a parish church or a new arrival. The town had a population of 20,608 in 2022 and is the largest urban centre in County Sligo, so a local florist is rarely more than a short drive from the recipient.
Sligo is the county town of County Sligo, in the province of Connacht, and its Eircode routing key is F91. The River Garavogue runs through the middle of the town, and Knocknarea, with its great cairn, dominates the skyline to the west. The shell middens near the estuary gave the town its Irish name, Sligeach, which means a place abounding in shells. Because the town runs into areas such as Ballytivnan, Cartron and Rosses Point Road, give the florist a full address and a seven-character Eircode where you have one.
Orders cover the streets around the medieval core, the older terraces near the Mall, the housing estates on the edge of town and the nearby coastal communities. Strandhill, where Sligo RFC plays at Hamilton Park about 8 km west of the town, and Rosses Point, a short drive north, are common destinations for birthday and anniversary bouquets. Rural addresses outside the town are fine, but include a landmark or the townland name as well as the Eircode, as farm entrances can be hard to spot.
Sligo provides hospital services to much of the north-west, and its two main hospitals are Sligo University Hospital and St John's Community Hospital. A private hospital also stands at Garden Hill. Ring the ward before ordering, because many wards ask visitors not to bring flowers and some patients prefer a card. If flowers are allowed, give the patient's full name and the ward and ask for them to be left at the nurses' station. If the stay is a long one, a bouquet sent to the recipient's home for their return is often more welcome.
Funerals in Ireland often take place within two or three days of a death, and notices on rip.ie say whether the family prefers flowers or donations to a named charity. The Catholic parish churches in town include the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Temple Street, and the Church of Ireland cathedral of St John the Baptist stands on John Street. Whether flowers go to a church, a funeral home or the family house, ask the funeral director or the family when the removal takes place. A simple white arrangement and a few written words travel well.
Sligo hosts Sligo Live every October, the Sligo Jazz Project each July and the Sligo Festival of Baroque Music, which started in 1995 and takes place on the last weekend of September. The town also hosted the Fleadh Cheoil in 2014 and 2015, when roughly 400,000 people attended over the two festivals. Musicians and visiting guests often receive flowers on the night of a concert, and a florist can have a bouquet ready if you give the venue name, the performer's name and the evening of the show.
For a birthday in a Sligo household, mixed seasonal stems with plenty of green are popular. In spring, tulips and daffodils are the natural choice, and Mothering Sunday, which falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, is the busiest weekend of the season. For a wedding anniversary, roses in the shade of the original bouquet remain a favourite. A new baby calls for soft shades, and many families keep the card from the first bouquet in the baby book. For a thank-you to a teacher or a nurse, a hand-tied posy is more practical than a large arrangement.
The Atlantic Technological University has a campus on Ash Lane, and its students and staff are part of the town's daily life. Anyone sending flowers to a student should give the department and a mobile number, since term-time addresses change. Workplace deliveries are best addressed to a named person with a company name, a floor or department and a phone number.
Pick a delivery date at checkout, and think about a back-up address in case no one is home. Bank holiday weekends and the first Monday of February, when St Brigid's Day is observed, are busy for florists, so order a few days early. Mention the recipient's allergies and favourite colours, and add a short message that sounds like you.
Did you know? Sligo's Magheraboy causewayed enclosure, found during roadworks in 2002 and dated to around 4000 BC, is the oldest of its kind discovered in Britain or Ireland.
