The private hospital in Mahon on the south-east side of Cork city opened in October 2010 as the Cork Medical Centre, built by the founders of Blackrock Clinic and the Galway Clinic. It closed in 2011 after failing to agree cover with a major health insurer, and was bought and reopened in 2012 as the Mater Private Hospital, Cork, part of the same group as the Mater Private in Dublin. It has about 102 in-patient beds and six operating theatres.
