Sending flowers to someone in Beaumont Hospital
Beaumont is one of Dublin's busiest teaching hospitals. Before you order, ask the ward whether flowers are allowed, and if not, send them to the patient's home for the day they get out.
Beaumont Hospital is a large teaching hospital in Beaumont, on the northside of Dublin, opened in 1987 to replace the old Richmond and Jervis Street hospitals. It has around 820 beds and about 3,000 staff, it works closely with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, which trains doctors there, and it is one of the country's designated cancer centres. St Joseph's Hospital in Raheny is run by the same board.
Before you send flowers to Beaumont
A big acute hospital has many different units, and the rules are not the same on all of them. Intensive care, the cancer and transplant wards and other units with vulnerable patients often take no fresh flowers at all, and in recent years public hospitals in Ireland have tightened the rules further. The kindest thing is to ring the ward, or ask the family, before you choose a bouquet. If flowers are welcome, keep the arrangement small and low enough for a bedside locker.
What to put on the order
Put down the name the patient was admitted under, the ward name or number, and Beaumont Hospital, Beaumont Road, Dublin 9. A phone number for a relative helps if the ward has moved the patient. A short, warm message on the card is enough.
When flowers are not allowed
Plenty of patients are home again within a few days. A bouquet delivered to the house on the day after discharge, or a potted plant that lasts, can mean more than flowers that would have been sent back from the ward. Home deliveries across Dublin go out six days a week.
Did you know? Beaumont Hospital was officially opened on 29 November 1987, and its design was based on the plans for Cork University Hospital.
Frequently asked questions about flowers to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin
Are flowers allowed on the wards at Beaumont Hospital?
It depends on the ward. Units such as intensive care often do not accept fresh flowers for infection reasons. Ring the ward or ask the patient's family before you order, so the bouquet is not turned away.
What address should I use for a patient at Beaumont?
Use the patient's full name, the ward, and Beaumont Hospital, Beaumont Road, Dublin 9. Adding a family member's phone number helps if the patient has been moved to another ward or discharged.
What can I send instead if the ward does not allow flowers?
Send a bouquet or a plant to the patient's home, timed for the day after they are discharged. It gives them something to enjoy at home, when visitors have stopped coming and recovery is slower.
